Philanthropy and Family: New York Times

Market Street Trust Company Recognized by New York Times in Wealth Matters article by Paul Sullivan

For the Houghtons, Market Street’s founding family, philanthropy means so much more than simply supporting a cause. Philanthropy is also a means of connecting the family; to each other and to the community where their former family business continues to thrive today. The Corning, NY community, remains the hometown headquarters of what is now Corning Incorporated, a business started by Amory Houghton back in the mid to late 1800s. For roughly 100 years, the business grew steadily under a Houghton family leader, becoming a large employer in upstate New York. As the business grew, so did their relationship with the community itself, the downtown core and the many surrounding towns and villages where worker lived and raised their families.

As the Houghton family continued to grow, well into their 6th generation by the mid 1990s, they also continued to spread out across the country and in some cases, even abroad. As the physical distance grew, and the company moved away from Houghton leadership, they began looking for avenues to stay connected, not only to one another, but to the very people and community that made their success possible. Driven by a desire to give back and the search for a common thread that would connect family members to each other and their roots, The Triangle Fund, the Houghton Family Foundation, was born.
